‘Yelllowstone’ Fans Flock to Watch Star’s 71% Rotten Tomatoes Dark Folk Horror
According to FlixPatrol, The Cursed was the sixth-most-popular film on Netflix in the United States on July 20, beating the likes of Brick, Penguins of Madagascar, Despicable Me 4, and The Old Guard 2. That’s quite a diverse slate of titles for any film to outperform, let alone one that barely got a theatrical release despite being designed for one. The Cursed earned positive reviews, and is currently sitting at a “fresh” 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, however, were more mixed. They awarded the film a 54% score on the aggregator website, where the critics’ consensus reads, “For a werewolf movie, The Cursed is frustratingly lacking in killer instinct — but its intriguing additions to well-worn mythology add some necessary bite.”
The Cursed debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021 under the title Eight for Silver. In the film, Holbrook plays a traveling physician who investigates a series of mysterious deaths on a nobleman’s grounds. In a retrospective review for Collider, Kyle Grammatica wrote that the movie “successfully handles the period piece portion of its genre, the horror is ineffective, repetitive, and overly derivative.” He noted that the movie works better as a period piece than as a werewolf horror. Perhaps director Robert Eggers will satisfy fans of Gothic horror stories with his upcoming film, Werwulf.

Reilly and Holbrook Have Appeared In A-List Projects
Reilly, of course, is best known for her supporting role in the massively successful Paramount+ series Yellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone has become the streamer’s flagship series, and has inspired several spin-offs. Holbrook is no stranger to the Western genre himself, having starred in Hatfields & McCoys, Jane Got a Gun, and the superhero blockbuster Logan. He last played Johnny Cash in James Mangold‘s A Complete Unknown. You can watch The Cursed on Netflix in the U.S., and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
