Father Tedd icon Pauline McLynn fears Corrie debut will be slated by fans

Pauline McLynn fears her debut on Coronation Street will be slated by fans. The TV legend has joined the soap to play gobby newcomer Maggie Driscoll and she’s nervous about the reaction she’ll get.

She said: “When you join something as wonderful as Corrie, you don’t want to mess up. It’s a huge responsibility to be in the long line of strong older women. It’s nerve-wracking. I’ve begun to realise just how what a huge deal this is.

“When my family first appear on screen, I presume all hell will break loose with fans either liking it or not liking it. We’ll see.”

Pauline has been working extra hard to make her scenes as entertaining as possible.

She added: “I’ve been busy on set and then realised, ‘Oh my God, there’s expectation is huge’. I had to have a little chat with myself and say, ‘Make sure every day you’re at 110% or else’.”

Maggie will arrive in Weatherfield in Monday night’s episode, which is at 8pm on ITV1.

Pauline has a plan if viewers aren’t impressed.

She joked: “If it goes wrong I’ll just blame everyone else. I’ll say, ‘They made me look bad’ and ‘They didn’t put the camera on me for the good bit’.”

Pauline has starred in a string of big shows over the years including EastEnders and Father Ted.

But she’s been shocked by how tough Corrie is.

She said: “It is a bewilderingly fast pace. You have to make decision quickly and you trust the writers and directors.”
