THE WARNING SHE COULDN’T IGNORE: SALLY CARMAN’S SECRET FAMILY PACT

Abi Webster is a staple on the cobbles of Coronation Street, but actress Sally Carman has revealed the concerns her parents had over her accepting the role.

She has been involved in a dramatic love triangle for the last year, but this isn’t Abi’s first time at the centre of a major storyline.

During her time on the cobbles, Abi has battled a drug addiction, lost her son to a hate crime attack, and fallen pregnant after cheating on Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) with Imran Habeeb.

In the last year alone, Abi has suffered PTSD after witnessing Mason Radcliffe’s death and supported Kevin through a cancer diagnosis, before ultimately having an affair with his brother Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard).

However, actress Sally had no idea that all of this was in Abi’s future when she was first offered the role.

‘I was at my mum and dad’s and a call came through from my agent saying “do you want to do eight episodes of Coronation Street?”‘ Sally told The Sun.

Of course, this was a big deal, but Sally’s parents were unsure. Fortunately, she followed her gut and accepted the role.

‘My dad was telling me how eight episodes would discount me for a proper role but you know, when you know,’ she explained.

‘I was like, “I’m going to do it,” and it has just turned into something amazing.’

Abi was not the first Coronation Street role Sally auditioned for, with the actress confessing to having attended ‘easily more than 40 auditions’ for various characters over the years, as well as ‘about 10 screen tests’ for different parts.

‘You have to audition for Corrie – no one is special and there is no way around it,’ Sally continued to the publication.

Prior to joining the cast of Coronation Street, Sally had roles in countless TV shows, but she was perhaps best known for playing Kelly Maguire in the UK version of Shameless.

She is not the only cast member of Shameless to walk the cobbles, with Jamie Maguire star Aaron McCusker recently joining the ITV soap as the newest Rovers landlord Ben Driscoll.

It was also recently revealed that Kelli Hollis, who played Yvonne Karib in Shameless, is also set to join the cast of Corrie, 11 years after her Emmerdale character Ali Spencer last appeared on screen.

Away from the small screen, Sally also had a role in Paddy Considine’s 2011 movie Tyrannosaur. The film starred legends like Eddie Marsan and Peter Mullan, and marked Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman’s first role away from comedy.

Sally played the role of Marie, and shared scenes with Olivia and Peter.
