Burton’s latest return was in 2024. In the past few years, Burton has gained work on The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives. Burton’s latest exit does raise some questions about Jason Morgan’s exit from Port Charles.
Why is Steve Burton leaving General Hospital?
Steve Burton is leaving General Hospital temporarily for personal reasons. The actor announced on Instagram,
“Hey everyone, I wanted to share that I’ll be taking a short break from @generalhospitalabc. I’m newly married and looking forward to spending some quality time with my family. I’m grateful for all the support and will be back this summer.”

Jason Morgan’s history of exits on General Hospital
Jason Morgan has left Port Charles many times. Each exit has been tied to danger, sacrifice, or survival.
In 2000, mob violence forced his first major departure. Joseph Sorel targeted Sonny and those close to him. A bomb was planted in Elizabeth’s studio. Jason thought he was risking her life. He said his goodbyes. Then, he rode out of town.
He returned months later but left again for Sonny’s business. Puerto Rico called him away on another dangerous assignment. His life remained tied to the mob.
In 2012, Jason was shot on the pier. Faison, disguised as Duke, pulled the trigger. Jason fell into the harbor. His body was never recovered.
Port Charles believed he was dead. Sam refused to give up hope. The Quartermaines mourned him.
In 2014, someone like Jason resurfaced. He had plastic surgery and memory loss. He was later revealed to be Drew Cain. The real Jason remained missing.
In 2017, the true Jason returned. He had been held captive for years. His comeback exposed the twin switch.
Relationships were fractured overnight. Sam was torn between two men. Sonny welcomed his friend home.
In 2021, Jason left on what seemed like a simple trip. He agreed to marry Carly to protect her legally. Before they could wed, Sonny returned alive. Jason later traveled with Britt to Cassadine Island.
Peter Novak opened fire inside the tunnels. A collapse buried Jason under rubble. The body was not found. He was presumed dead again.
In 2024, Jason resurfaced again. He had been working under FBI control. His return shocked Carly and Sonny. He reconnected with Danny. He tried to rebuild trust with Britt.
From 1991 to 2024: Burton’s long journey as Jason Morgan
Jason Quartermaine arrived in Port Charles in 1991 as the privileged heir to the powerful Quartermaine family. He was a dedicated medical student. However, he got in a car accident that changed a lot of things.
The brain injury altered his personality. He rejected the Quartermaine name and cut ties with his past. Jason Quartermaine became Jason Morgan.
He found purpose working for Sonny Corinthos. He became Sonny’s most trusted enforcer and closest ally. Calm and controlled, he handled mob threats without hesitation. Loyalty guided his decisions.
He protected Carly from the moment she arrived in town. He helped raise Michael and chose family on his own terms.
Love revealed his softer edges over time. His romance with Robin Scorpio showed unexpected vulnerability. His connection with Elizabeth Webber remained deep and complicated. With Sam McCall, he built a lasting partnership.
They welcomed their son, Danny, and fatherhood changed him. He remained dangerous, but more grounded.
Jason faced kidnappings, shootings, and relentless enemies. The Cassadines and Faison repeatedly threatened his life.
He was presumed dead more than once. Each return reshaped Port Charles. By 2024, Jason was still fighting to protect those he loved most.
