Casualty star admits ‘we can’t breathe’ as they share behind-the-scenes clip

It looks as though there’s going to be some nail-biting drama on BBC’s Casualty this upcoming Saturday (March 7) as Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) and Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak) need to recover a crushed baby.

As they rush to get the infant to the hospital as quickly as possible, not all goes to plan as the ambulance seems to break down, leaving the pair stuck in a tunnel.

Sharing some behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming episode, the team shows viewers how they achieve the dramatic outcome.

Actor Michael Stevenson informs people that they were on a night shoot at Bute Tunnels in Cardiff, which began at eight o’clock at night and would end at five o’clock in the morning.

He said: “We’ve got the tunnels shut down and we’re filming a stunt. So we’ve had to shut down the tunnels for the night and we’ve got free run of the place, we’ve got all the crew on this side and then on the other side of the tunnel, they’re just setting up to do the stunt.”

Detailing more about the stunt, Michael shared that as Iain is having to speed through the tunnel as it’s a ‘real emergency’ to get the baby into the emergency department.Casualty star admits 'we can't breathe' as they share behind-the-scenes clip - The Mirror

Producer Erika Hossington explained that as ambulances aren’t designed to go that fast, they run into trouble when the engine blows.

She said: “To create this, we need the special effects people to come in and actually, black smoke is very, very difficult to create. We have to be aware of ventilation and people’s health and all of that sort of thing.”

Touching on filming the stunt, Naomi told fans that they have to wear a gas mask when the smoke is first let off and then take it off when the cameras start rolling.

She added: “It’s 3,2,1, masks off and then action, you know we have to act like we can’t breathe, but we can’t breathe, so it’s not really much acting required!”

Erika called the stunt a ‘huge undertaking’, revealing they have roughly 150 people working with them on location.

It wasn’t long before people commented on the clip, with many looking forward to the episode. One person said: “Yaaayyy! Love BTS videos! More more!” Another wrote: “Ekkkkkkkkkk. I’m so excited for this episode.”

Someone else commented: “Major indie and Ian (sic) scenes next episode? Yes, please.” As one fan added: “So cool!”

A synopsis for the upcoming episode reads: “Jan answers a call to blood-chilling screams from a woman begging for help for her baby, and Iain struggles to contain his emotions as he rushes to the caller’s aid to find the child has been crushed.

“SIobhan is told that charges against Chris Banfield will be dropped, Matty is reluctant to treat a patient with lung cancer alone, and Rida faces losing two staff members.”
