BBC Casualty stars ‘can’t breathe’ filming dramatic stunt in sneak peek

Casualty: Fenisha tends to patients in ‘Code Orange’ episode

Viewers can expect some heart-stopping drama on BBC’s Casualty this Saturday (March 7) as Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) and Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak) must rescue a critically injured baby.

Whilst racing to transport the infant to hospital as swiftly as possible, things take a turn for the worse when the ambulance appears to malfunction, stranding the duo inside a tunnel.

In behind-the-scenes footage from the forthcoming episode, the production team reveals how they created the tense sequence.

Actor Michael Stevenson reveals they filmed overnight at Cardiff’s Bute Tunnels, starting at eight o’clock in the evening and wrapping at five o’clock the following morning.

He said: “We’ve got the tunnels shut down and we’re filming a stunt. So we’ve had to shut down the tunnels for the night and we’ve got free run of the place, we’ve got all the crew on this side and then on the other side of the tunnel, they’re just setting up to do the stunt.”

Providing further insight into the stunt, Michael explained that Iain must race through the tunnel due to the ‘real emergency’ of getting the baby to the emergency department, reports the Mirror.

Producer Erika Hossington clarified that because ambulances aren’t built for such high speeds, they encounter difficulties when the engine fails. She explained: “To create this, we need the special effects people to come in and actually, black smoke is very, very difficult to create. We have to be aware of ventilation and people’s health and all of that sort of thing.”

Discussing filming the stunt, Naomi informed fans that they must wear a gas mask when the smoke is initially released and then remove it when the cameras begin rolling.

She continued: “It’s 3,2,1, masks off and then action, you know we have to act like we can’t breathe, but we can’t breathe, so it’s not really much acting required!”

Erika described the stunt as a ‘massive undertaking’, revealing they have approximately 150 people collaborating with them on location.

It wasn’t long before individuals commented on the clip, with many eagerly anticipating the episode. One person said: “Yaaayyy! Love BTS videos! More more!” Another wrote: “Ekkkkkkkkkk. I’m so excited for this episode.”
