Casualty star admits ‘we can’t breathe’ filming BBC stunt in Cardiff tunnel

BBC’s Casualty is set to deliver some edge-of-your-seat drama this coming Saturday (March 7), as characters Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) and Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak) face the daunting task of rescuing a trapped infant.

Their mission to rush the baby to hospital hits a snag when their ambulance breaks down, stranding them in a tunnel.

The production team has shared a glimpse behind the scenes of this gripping episode, revealing how they crafted the intense sequence.

Actor Michael Stevenson reveals that the night shoot took for the BBC show place at Cardiff’s Bute Tunnels, commencing at eight in the evening and wrapping up at five in the morning.

He explained: “We’ve got the tunnels shut down and we’re filming a stunt. So we’ve had to shut down the tunnels for the night and we’ve got free run of the place, we’ve got all the crew on this side and then on the other side of the tunnel, they’re just setting up to do the stunt.”

Elaborating on the stunt, Michael disclosed that his character Iain is forced to speed through the tunnel due to the ‘real emergency’ of getting the baby to the emergency department, reports the Mirror.

Producer Erika Hossington clarified that the ambulance encounters difficulties when its engine fails, as these vehicles aren’t built for high-speed travel.

She said: “To create this, we need the special effects people to come in and actually, black smoke is very, very difficult to create. We have to be aware of ventilation and people’s health and all of that sort of thing.”

Discussing the filming of the stunt, Naomi explained to fans that they must wear a gas mask when the smoke is initially released, then remove it once the cameras begin recording.

She added: “It’s 3,2,1, masks off and then action, you know we have to act like we can’t breathe, but we can’t breathe, so it’s not really much acting required!”

Erika described the stunt as a ‘huge undertaking’, disclosing they have approximately 150 people working with them on location.

It wasn’t long before people responded to the clip, with many eagerly anticipating the episode. One person said: “Yaaayyy! Love BTS videos! More more!” Another wrote: “Ekkkkkkkkkk. I’m so excited for this episode.”

Someone else commented: “Major indie and Ian (sic) scenes next episode? Yes, please.” As one fan added: “So cool!”

A synopsis for the forthcoming episode reads: “Jan answers a call to blood-chilling screams from a woman begging for help for her baby, and Iain struggles to contain his emotions as he rushes to the caller’s aid to find the child has been crushed.
