Emmerdale’s Chris Coghill message supported after Kev Townsend return confirmation
He’s returning to the Dales, and will once again be ruffling feathers
Emmerdale star Chris Coghill has been flooded with support as he shared a message following the news that he’ll be reprising the role of Kev Townsend in the long-running show.
The actor first appeared on the ITV soap as Kev last autumn, introduced as the estranged husband of Robert Sugden, with the pair tying the knot during their time in prison together.
During his time in the Dales, viewers saw him try and stop Robert’s reunion with former partner, Aaron Dingle, narrowly escape from serial killer John Sugden, and be revealed as the long-lost father of Lewis Barton.
Kev then left Emmerdale earlier this year after a brief stint over the festive period during which he fled following the dramatic reveal of his long-lost son – who is currently unaware of the identity of his biological father.
But, it was confirmed on Wednesday (April 1) that he will return to the village with a new business venture, which is said to stir up trouble for the locals.
In a statement, Chris, known for Slow Horses and Shameless, said: “I’m really pleased to be returning to Emmerdale, I had a brilliant time last year. Kev is a complex character that I love playing. He has psychopathic tendencies but also an energy and vulnerability that I think makes him pretty unique. I’m properly looking forward to getting back at it.”

Following the announcement, Chris also took to Instagram and said: “Happy days. See yer soon Emmerdale mob. Lemon drizzle fo’ shizzle. @emmerdale.” Danny Miller, who plays Aaron, was quick to show his support, as he said: “Soaps’s Best Recomer 2026/27 AND 28 for me! Can’t wait!!!”
Vanessa Woodfield actress Michelle Hardwick cheered: “Yeah!!!! So lovely to see you the other day.” Isabel Hodgins, who plays Victoria Sugden in the ITV soap, added: “Couldn’t be more excited!!!!”
Meanwhile, Laura Shaw, Emmerdale producer, added in a statement: “Both Chris and the character of Kev made a massive impact on the show last year, so Chris is most definitely back by popular demand. With Kev’s son, Lewis, in the village still unaware of who his father is, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of unfinished business and drama ahead.”
