Coronation Street star explains Betsy and Lisa’s explosive new clash

In scenes set to air next week, Betsy has night out to celebrate her 18th birthday, and returns home in the morning after spending the night with Dylan Wilson.

Lisa tries to have some words with her, but Betsy doesn’t want to her it, telling her mum that she’s not a little girl and stomps off.
Speaking about her character’s mindset, Martin stated: “[Betsy] lost her mum a few years ago, then at the beginning of this year she lost Mason, so she’s dealt with a huge amount of grief already in her life.
“I think she’s been seeing people and maybe not telling her mum about it because she doesn’t want to be treated like a kid. It’s a really interesting dynamic with her mum, in that they’re so bad at communicating with each other, because Lisa just wants to protect her baby.
“But at the same time, because of a job, she’s very controlling in the way she does it and I think Betsy finds that quite intrusive. For Lisa it’s coming from a place of caring but for Betsy it feels quite overbearing, it feels more like a detective asking questions rather than a concerned mum.
“So I think Betsy’s first response is to shut off and obviously Lisa finds that heartbreaking because she feels as though she’s losing a little girl after already losing such a big part of her life in who she thought was her lifelong partner.”
Martin added that Betsy “doesn’t know how to deal with all her feelings yet” regarding her blossoming romance with Dylan, and is also “raging with hormones” which partly is why she puts on such a brave face.
“She’s still young, she still needs her mum and she still needs to rely on the family dynamic, but sometimes she lashes out at them because it’s easier to lash out than explain yourself,” the actor continued.
She concluded that she loves the dynamic in the household with co-stars Vicky Myers and Alison King, as the family bickering is the kind of realness she thinks that the soap does so well.
Unfortunately for Betsy, her birthday will take a dark turn that makes her realise just how much she needs her mother.
