Emmerdale clears up fan confusion about Robert Sugden’s prison husband in early ITVX episode

Emmerdale‘s Robert Sugden has reiterated his secret motivations after welcoming his prison husband Kev Townsend back into his life. The fan favourite is currently caught up in a huge mess, as he’s reconnecting with Kev following the hardman’s release from jail – despite wanting to settle down with ex-husband Aaron Dingle again.

The inevitable happens in tonight’s episode, as Robert’s two separate lives collide. Aaron can’t believe his eyes when he witnesses Robert and Kev sharing a kiss in the village.

Aaron fears that Robert is treating him like a fool, but Robert insists that he’s only really interested in the inheritance money he can expect in a few months’ time since Kev is terminally ill.

Robert first mentioned this tempting payout at the end of last month, but all had gone quiet on that front in more recent episodes.

“He was never supposed to be released – but now he’s dying,” Robert explains. “He’s got five months, tops. Why else do you think I’m playing the devoted husband?

“He’s leaving a quarter of a mil – and it’s all coming to me, to us. Five months, 250 grand. He doesn’t get his heart broke. It’s the easiest money you and I are ever going to make.”

Later, though, things get even more complicated as unwell Kev suffers a heart attack at Charles and Claudette Anderson’s place.

After Kev is rushed to hospital, Aaron pushes Robert to be more honest about his feelings. And while Robert initially wanted Aaron to believe that this was purely about money, it seems that it’s not so clear-cut…

“He’s not just some meal ticket,” Robert clarifies. “I’m not in love with him. I did love him – once. And maybe I still do, but not the way that you think.

“I care about him. He’s not all bad. He can be kind, vulnerable. We have a bond. It’s complicated – he’s complicated, but you’re the one that I want to spend the rest of my life with.”

But with Aaron refusing to wait for Kev to die, does Robert have a huge decision to make between the two guys in his life?
