General Hospital’s Cameron Mathison On Drew Hate and Fans Attacking

Look, no one will argue anymore that General Hospital‘s Drew is a nice guy. We’re not sure we could find many in Port Charles who would. And we know his own wife wouldn’t, especially as Willow shot him and is now keeping him paralyzed and trapped! Even Cameron Mathison doesn’t bother defending Drew!

When the actor appeared on Good Morning America, he just laid it all out, saying, “Drew… he’s just not a good human. And I’ve never really played a character like this in 30 years of doing this. And it’s been really fun, but at the same time, it’s bizarre being hated so much in America and in the canvas.”

As Robin Roberts told him, they’ve all known Mathison for a long time and they know how nice he really, truly is! But then there’s Drew…

“It’s weird,” Mathison laughed. “It’s very bizarre. I was telling you guys that I’ve had apples thrown at me in the supermarket. I’ve had people roll up magazines, beat me. I’ve had a car almost run me over on the street. I’m not used to these things happening, which means maybe I’m doing a good job.”

Maybe he is (actually, he definitely is) but that doesn’t mean people should be attacking him in any way shape or form in real life! Full stop. An apple is bad enough, but attacking him with a car? We can’t imagine having to face that kind of vitriol. But Mathison does and, honestly, he deals with a lot better than we likely would.

“I’ll say this, too,” he added, “it’s a bit of a release for me. It’s a bit of a therapeutic release. I’ve been through a series of pretty big life challenges and I try to be positive and resilient and upbeat. And then I go to work and I get to just let it all [out]!”

That’s to put it mildly. Cancer, losing his home in the Eaton fire, separating from his wife — Mathison has been through a lot! And hey, what better way to channel those feelings than a character like Drew? So if there’s a positive to come out of Drew’s villainy, there’s always that. But seriously, folks, stop attacking the man. He’s just doing his job, and he’s doing it darn well!
