ITV Coronation Street’s Betsy Swain star announces career move away from cobbles

Coronation Street’s Sydney Martin has been supported by her co-stars as she announced an exciting career move away from the cobbles. The actress made her soap debut as Betsy Swain last year and soon became a fan-favourite.
Betsy has been at the heart of the drama on the cobbles in iconic scenes which saw her mum, D.S Lisa Swain propose to Carla Connor. They recently purchased a house on Coronation Street, making history as the first same sex-couple to do so.
The 18-year-old has had a whirlwind time in Weatherfield, recently admitting she slept with Dylan while exploring her bond with newcomer troublemaker Brody. However, little does she know her mum, who supposedly died four years ago, made a dramatic return on Monday.
Thankfully, the actress’ life is far less dramatic away from the screen. Sydney recently announced she will be starring in a short film, called Through The Eyes Of Bairns. The story tackles the issue of domestic abuse.
The news was announced in a post on Instagram, as Sydney will be playing the young adult version of a character called Rose. The post was captioned: “Introducing the incredible Sydney Martin who’ll be playing the role of Young Adult Rose.
“During flashbacks, we’ll see how Rose came to be estranged from her father, Ivan, all those years ago. Rose has always been headstrong but as we watch her grow and discover who she is, Rose also uncovers the dark secret of who her father really is and just what horrors he’s capable of…”
Sydney Martin’s Coronation Street co-stars rushed to the comments to show their support. Cait Fitton, her on-screen best friend Lauren, said: “Proud of you my besto” with a red love heart emoji.
Liam McCheyne, who portrays Dylan, wrote: “Go smash it Syd!! X.” Meanwhile, hundreds of fans took to the comments to send their congratulations to the star.
One fan said: “OMG this is going to be amazing.” A second wrote: “Fantastic to see your career going from strength to strength. Congratulations!!” A third also added: “Oh my god you’re going to absolutely smash this. Well done Sydney.”
Sydney has appeared on Coronation Street since June 2024, after initially applying for two smaller roles at the beginning of 2024. Sydney’s role in in the soap is her first televised acting role. Before landing the role of Betsy, she was working in Tesco.
Since appearing on the iconic cobbles, she has become a popular cast member and has been involved in a number of major storylines. The actress has recently celebrated her one-year anniversary on Coronation Street.
Sydney took to Instagram to celebrate the anniversary. She wrote: “1 whole year of Betsy Swain, so incredibly lucky & grateful. I love my job xxx.”
