ITV Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney declares love for co-star as fans rush to show support

Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney has declared her love for one of her co-stars in an emotional post on social media. The soap star arrived on the cobbles in 2023 as Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) estranged mother, Cassie Plummer. She was quick to shake things up in Weatherfield but has now established herself as a firm favourite character among viewers.
In recent months, the soap has been filled with endless jam-packed storylines, from the Platt’s house becoming engulfed in flames to Craig Tinker’s heartbreaking death. One storyline which remains at the heart the soap is Debbie Webster’s emotional dementia diagnosis.
Earlier this year, the character underwent a number of tests for dementia. Debbie, portrayed by the marvellous Sue Devaney had, been concerned about her memory loss and mistakes she had made at work. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Debbie discovered that her illness is incurable and she will eventually die.
Debbie struggled to come to terms with her fate and was unable to open up to anyone about her diagnosis. She recently confided in her half-brother Carl (Jonathan Howard) after pushing her fiancé Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) further away. She made the decision to end their engagement, but the couple have recently rekindled as Ronnie is keep to support Debbie in her journey.
In a recent post on Coronation Street’s official Instagram, the ITV soap encouraged fans to show their support for Sue Devaney who has been nominated at this year’s National Television Awards. Sharing Debbie’s emotional monologue, the post was liked by thousands of soap viewers and many Corrie stars took to the comments to send their love.

The post was captioned with the words: “She’s a superstar, and she is breaking the nation’s hearts with this storyline. Vote now for the phenomenal Sue Devaney at this year’s National Television Awards. Be quick, time is running out!”
Taking to the comments, Claire Sweeney (Cassime Plummer) wrote: “I love you @suedevaney13 fabulous in every way xxx.” Sally Carman (Abi Webster) followed suit: “Absolute powerhouse!!! LOVE this uber talented woman to bits!!!”
The post was liked several Corrie actors including Jack P Shepherd (David Platt), Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt), Sally Dynevor (Sally Metcalfe), Catherine Tyldesley (Eva Price) and Daniel Brocklebank (Billy Mayhew).
Coronation Street viewers did not shy away from showing their support for Sue over on Instagram. One fan said: “Sue is my winner. She’s totally amazing” while another agreed: “She’s 100% got my vote. An absolute powerhouse!!”
A third added: “Brilliant actor and character. The best of Corrie in recent years.” Some viewers can also relate to the heartbreaking storyline as one user wrote: “As someone who cared for my grandmother for five years with Alzheimer’s, this story touches me deeply! Sue plays phenomenally!”
Debbie first graced the Cobbles in 1984 as Kevin’s sister, played by Michael Le Vell. After departing in 1985, she made a dramatic comeback in 2019. Taking the reins of the Chariot Square hotel not long ago, Debbie has quickly become a beloved character with viewers.
The next few months will see Debbie embark on her own health journey as she comes to terms with the diagnosis and what it will mean for her and her family.
Coronation Street producers are working closely with Dementia UK on this long term storyline which will explore the effects of young onset dementia on Debbie and those close to her.
