Shane Withington shares heart condition that forced him to be hospitalized and give up acting career
In a deeply emotional and brutally honest confession that has stunned fans, Home and Away favourite Shane Withington has revealed the secret health crisis that left him hospitalized — and forced him to confront the heartbreaking possibility of giving up the acting career he has loved for more than four decades.
Withington, best known for his long-running role as the beloved John Palmer in the hit Aussie soap, has spoken for the first time about the serious heart condition that sent his life spiralling into uncertainty and fear. What began as a few “strange symptoms” quickly turned into a medical emergency that doctors warned could no longer be ignored.
“It crept up on me,” Shane shares. “At first it was fatigue, then breathlessness… I just kept pushing through, like actors always do. We’re used to saying, ‘She’ll be right,’ and turning up to work no matter how we feel. But this time, I wasn’t right — and it nearly cost me everything.”

According to the 66-year-old star, things escalated rapidly when he collapsed at home after filming. Paramedics rushed him to hospital where specialists delivered the news he never imagined hearing: his heart was struggling, and if he didn’t stop working immediately, the consequences could be dire.
“It was sobering. I’ve never been so frightened,” he admits. “The doctor looked me in the eye and said, ‘You need to rest. Not tomorrow. Now.’ To hear that — to be told to put the brakes on a career that has driven my whole adult life — it shattered me.”
Forced into an unexpected hiatus, Withington says the emotional toll hit even harder than the physical one. Lying in a hospital bed, he realised how much of his identity was tied to his craft. “Acting isn’t just a job to me — it’s where I feel most alive. The idea of walking away, of saying goodbye to the Home and Away family… I can’t describe the grief I felt.”
But incredibly, the beloved actor says the crisis also gave him clarity. Withington credits the unwavering support of colleagues, fans and his partner, actor Anne Tenney, for pulling him through some of the darkest moments of his life.
“Anne never left my side,” he says. “My Home and Away castmates were sending messages constantly, telling me to focus on getting well. It reminded me that this show is more than a workplace — it’s a second family.”
After months of rest, treatment and lifestyle changes, Withington says he’s not only recovering — he’s determined to return stronger than ever. But he admits the ordeal has changed him, leaving him more reflective, more grateful and more protective of his health.
“I’ve had to accept that I’m not invincible,” he says. “But I’m still here, and I’m not done yet. If I can get back in front of the camera, even for a little while longer, it will be a gift.”
Fans will be relieved to know that Shane is optimistic — cautiously — about returning to the Bay. And while his future may look different, one thing is certain: his courage in sharing this terrifying chapter has only deepened the love audiences feel for him.
